The Orpheus Caving Club was established in 1949 to promote the scientific study and exploration of caves within the Peak District and in other areas of the UK and abroad. It is one of the longest established Derbyshire Caving Clubs with a rich history of caving activities to its credit. The Club membership is predominantly drawn from the Derbyshire and Leicestershire area with some members from other parts of the UK. New members are always welcome. Orpheus Caving Club has a cottage that is situated in open countryside in the Peak District National Park south of Buxton, close to the caving systems of Monyash, Lathkill Dale and the Manifold Valley and less than 20 miles from the Castleton caving area. The 'Cottage', as it is known, is available for use by Club members and for other groups visiting the Peak District and requiring hostel accommodation.

On many weekends there are Club Members staying at the Cottage and involved in a variety of caving activities within the Peak District. These range from sporting trips into the various caves and mines, along side activities of an exploratory nature.

In addition to this the Club organizes a regular programme of caving trips to other major caving areas within the UK and abroad. A list of these trips the meets list is published annually.
